Picking monsters for new DMs

For a party of four level 1 characters, a Low-difficulty fight is up to 200 XP of monsters (50 per character), for example four creatures of CR 1/4 (50 XP each) or eight of CR 1/8 (25 XP each). Fewer, tougher monsters swing harder than many weak ones, so for a first session try a group of CR 1/8 to 1/4 creatures, such as wolves or goblin warriors, and check it in the calculator. 90 of the creatures are Beasts, which also cover druid Wild Shape and many familiars and mounts.

Where the numbers come from

Name, size, type, alignment, Armor Class, Hit Points, speed, Challenge Rating and XP come straight from each stat block in the System Reference Document 5.2.1 (Monsters A–Z and Animals chapters), read from the official PDF. XP is as printed in each stat block; creatures with a lair list their higher in-lair XP in the SRD, and we use the regular XP. For actions, traits and full rules, open the stat block in the SRD.
